Day Two Forty One

There is a time in the late afternoon when I actually have to physically separate Luke and Lily form each other at the counter where we eat most of our meals or else they will just get so deep into each other rice bowl it is impossible to have a meal.

I had done this today and then heard the following:

Luke: No
Lily: Yesh
Luke: No!
Lily: Yesh!!
Luke: No!!
Lily: Yesh!!!
Luke: Nooooooo!!!
Lily: Yesssssshhhhhh!!!
Luke: Do you want me to move your chair closer to the counter?
Lily: Yes, thank you

Day Two Twelve

I know I have spoken before about the fact that a human’s brain is not fully developed until age seven and before that time the left and right halves of the brain are separated (the corpus callosum is not fully developed) and because of this, very fundamental understanding of right and wrong, good and bad are not altogether there.

I am afraid to admit that I get most of this kind  of info from my trusted, well read, RIE teacher. She says for a fuller understanding of this concept you should read:

Parenting From The Inside Out

and

The Developing Person Through The Life Span

We have lived and believed this for a long time, but it was not until the other day did Luke show us in his own words how true it is and why I am so happy we do not have any excessive media in our household and the school he is starting next year has a no media policy, here is what happened.

While on vacation Luke watched Fantastic Mr Fox. He watched a little bit before supper and was then telling us how his eyes were glued to it and he could not take his eyeballs away from the screen. We allowed him to finish watching it after supper.

Then the next night he last told us before bedtime about how he was a bit scared to go to sleep because the version of Mr Fox in his dreams was scarier than the version he saw on the TV. That he was ok watching the version of TV, but watching the version in his dreams was upsetting to him too much.

It was a relatively safe, good wake up call for Mom and Dad, and secretly I have been wanting to watch Mr Fox for a long time, no bad dreams for me though!

Day Two Ten

Love when two worlds collide in a child’s mind, so easy for a child, so hard for us adults.

Yesterday we went to the Aquarium. Luke’s favorite area was the shark tank where you can touch the bamboo and hammerheads. There is a person telling you facts about the sharks while you touch. One of the facts that stuck in his mind was that the sharks can hear for a distance of one mile underwater.

Today Luke built a robotic arm to add to his rocket ship (sometimes it is a Delta 5 and sometimes it is a Space Shuttle) He did the whole thing by himself, cutting the cardboard with his wood saw.

After liftoff I overheard this one tidbit

“Endeavor is now one mile above the surface of the earth where the sharks can still hear us”

It doesn’t get much better than that.

Day Two Zero Three

Cleaning the house one room per day is a sisyphean task, perhaps more akin to painting the Golden Gate Bridge, which is a constant a process that never stops to to its largess.

Almost like Lily fascinating with the iphone camera. Her record so far is 127 photos in a session.

I find something hypnotic and often beautiful about the photos, so I put them together in a little abstract movie. Keep in mind there is not a single photo duplicated in this film.

A budding Stan Brakhage!!
