Post 337: Growing pains
Lily has complained about growing pains a number of times, and I can only imagine how sore some parts of her body must be after a day of flying, running, climbing, jumping, tumbling, etc.
Tonight she just didn’t want to go to bed all that much and what I heard form the other room while I reading to Luke was:
“Daddy?”
“Yes Lil'”
“I have a growing pain”
“What is it Lil’?”
“I cant feel my eyes anymore”
Post 336: Camerawork
I have spent much of my life behind the lens of a camera, literally millions of feet of film have passed by my eyes.
When I was young I had this stigma about still photography, simply that when I saw a beautiful picture, I felt like, geez, I could have taken that if I was there at that moment? So what’s the big deal?
What I learned over the years is that the point is I was not there at that exact moment and did not choose to release the shutter at that very instant.
As the beloved photographer Henri-Cartier Bresson eloquently called, the decisive moment.
I also know that the viewfinder through a childs eye can be a fun and often an insightful look into their world. There have been many times at work where we are trying to emulate what a child might want to see, the perspective of a child being so unique, and it is not easy to do. There have been many instances of wonderful photography done by children.
With all that said I gave Luke and Lily an old camera to do with what they wish. Lily took it to school one day and I just love the “day in the life” of her photographs.
Post 335: Luke’s 7th Birthday
We have been somewhat unconventional in our birthday parties over the years, garbage trucks, real buried treasures, pinewood derby extravaganza, pretty much anything imaginative and fun that keeps us away from the horrifying spectacle of having a birthday party at an “event” place where grouchy teenagers serve you unpleasant food in a generic, fluorescent lit room.
As my sister said a few years ago, “someday your gonna run out of ideas and there will be heck to pay!”
This year we came close, but at the last minute genius once again motivated our path.
What was the plan?
To buy a bunch, like 100, geodes, and hammers and eye protection. Hide the geodes in one of our favorite places to go rock climbing. Invite Luke friends, give them the tools and let chaos ensue.
Did it work out, yes, was it really fun, YES. Was there a flash flood warning storm that blew in to let us know it was time to go YES! YES! YES!
Was there an amazing, one of a kind, Geode, Lego Chocolate and vanilla swirl cake, OOOOOHHHH YESSSSSS.
Was fun had, I certainly hope so.
Post 334: Luke builds Lily a car
Luke made this for Lily.
I showed him how to use the “wheel cutter”
That’s about it.
